Over this last week we’ve been reading and commenting on various blogs and forums surrounding objections in using and promoting the MyShoppingGenie application. As with anything in life – be it religion, politics, products or services there are always two sides of the fence.
The age old “Pro” verses “Con”.
With so much attention and focus, combined with the rapid pace MyShopppingGenie is spreading throughout the world – the product and company was bound to capture some negative attention and comments.
But – are the comments and the attention worthy of consideration?
Below are some examples of what’s being said compared to our experience – we’ll let you decide which version you like best. We’re not here to call out any specific person, blog or forum. While quotes have been captured from the Internet – who said it is irrelevant. That foundation being formed – our objective here is to help you understand various perceptions and objections. Anyone you come across could attempt to hold these against the company, the model, and the MyShoppingGenie application.
Who’s side you want to take here is entirely up to you.
What is stopping people from going directly to BizRate, Shopping.com or DealTime? The answer LAZINESS. I type once click on the Genie and I don’t type more.
Actually, yes. I like to type a product query into a search engine “once” and then click “once” inside the Genie to search up to six comparison sites at one time. Am I lazy because I use a microwave instead of a conventional oven? Is it considered lazy to type up something in an e-mail instead of hand writing a letter and using snail-mail? Why I use my cell phone instead of my home phone? Why I use Quicken for my finances instead of a book ledger – or why I use Google for research instead of encyclopedias?
Call it “lazy” if you’d like. I perceive it as not only convenient – but smart. Who’s right?
How is the result from BizRate.com when I search for “ACME cordless drill” differ from the BizRate search done by MyShoppingGenie? Do they differ at all? No, they don’t they are the same, thus going to BizRate.com and using the Genie yields the same page. So, why should I use the Genie?
Interesting that the objection confirms that a page MyShoppingGenie pulls up with one click is an exact match of what a direct search on BizRate pulls up by typing it in manually. Items and prices are no different between the two given a search done around the same time period. Query the same search term a week later on both – same items and pricing information populate on both.
Since both of us agree and confirm they’re the same – my question would be why not? Especially when I can conduct multiple searches on different shopping sites with one click using MyShoppingGenie.
If it’s because someone might consider me “lazy” – all I can say is guilty as charged.
How many licenses did you sell to get that paycheck? Are you planning to maintain that level of income every month? How may free Genies did you give out?
History is there to learn from it….
Computer sales rocketed and then a crash, everyone had a computer (1997)
Mobile phone sales rocketed and then a crash, everyone had a mobile phone (2002)
House sales rocketed and then crash, everyone had a house (to many to list, UK 1980; Ireland 2006,…)
Genies are sold great the first/second month, and then everyone has a license or has a Genie, so crash…
I am still of the opinion that Genies will stopped being used with time, and there goes your residual income. You only make sustainable income while selling licenses…
First – we don’t “sell” the Genie application. It’s free of charge. Complimentary if you will for anyone who wants to try it out.
Secondly – the example documents several hot products spanning over several years. You’re welcome to take your pick from computers, cell phones, VCR’s, DVD players and now Blu-ray players.
For that matter, think about Apple with its iPod, then iPhone, now the iPad. Then consider Microsoft with DOS, Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, ME, XP, Vista and now Windows 7.
Whew! That’s a ton of releases! Or are you focused and worried about the lack of interest in a 15 year old operating system? (Windows 95)
Furthermore – each Christmas season there’s a “hot product” that captures everyone’s attention. True – there won’t be very many Beanie Babies or Tickle Me Elmo’s flying off store shelves this Christmas season. That being known and confirmed, should Amazon.com, Google Products, e-Bay, and Overstock.com pull the plug on their servers because of it? Should Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, and K-Mart close their doors and board up their retail locations if they don’t stock either product?
Try convincing them to do so and they might call YOU lazy. (Or something much worse.)
It’s a pyramid scheme! A scam! An unsustainable model!
The Direct Selling Association is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. It’s astonishing that we still have individuals who buy into this myth that somebody at the bottom of a pyramid won’t have anyone left to sell too. The reality of Direct Sales shows us that The California Perfume Company recruited its first Sales Representative in 1889 – more than 120 years ago. If you don’t recognize the name – they changed the name in 1939 to Avon. Today, Avon leads all Direct Sales companies in revenue with $10.7 billion in product sales for 2009.
Interesting how the oldest “pyramid” around also leads in sales huh? In addition, while the company has been “recruiting” for 120 years – they haven’t found that last elusive woman at the bottom of what some fear is inevitable.
A reporter in Ireland actually did an exposé on MyShoppingGenie and asked the Founders directly about his phobia over “recruiting”. (It’s always asked under the guise of “protecting victims” in these instances by the way.) As with all fears and phobias surrounding Direct Sales, MLM or Network Marketing, “recruiting” was the reporters focus – not MyShoppingGenie or application installs.
Currently, MyShoppingGenie has more than 1.6 million installs of its application which are used over 300,000 times per day. The reporter however – who actually documented these numbers in his piece – came to the conclusion that 40,000 Distributors is far more “frightening”. (That’s a 40-1 ratio of installs over distributors.) Likewise, the number of Distributors who receive “click income” checks outnumber Distributors who receive “recruiting” checks by 3-1.
Make no mistake – “recruiting” scares the daylights out of certain individuals. Almost as if you’ve put a gun to someone’s head to make them sign up under duress instead of choice. It’s of our opinion – and only our “opinion” in this instance – that part of the appeal for the average person is the MyShoppingGenie opportunity is giving something away for free while still earning income.
There’s no hard sell here – it’s free.
In closing, we simply recommend to anyone looking at this that they first try the free Applet – see if it helps save them time and money. If you like it – get with someone you know or trust to see if this might be a good business model to get into. 1.6 million installs is a pretty good indicator.
It’s not for everyone and most people who don’t see it just let it go and move on if that’s the case.
There will always be those who need to justify their position based on fears and phobias that they want to shove down everyone else’s throat. Please remember – they’re entitled to their beliefs and opinions. (Just don’t expect everyone including me to own it or buy into it.)
Some will – some won’t and that’s perfectly okay.
If that’s the case – let’s just move on.

hope and change
Thank you for another great article. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a perfect way of writing? I have a presentation next week, and I am on the look for such information.
I love the way she has taken my words (almost all the quotes are from my posts) and has twisted them around to make them look positive.
The only questions she has never answered is where does MyNet Universe get the money to pay the pay-per-click.
Search companies (Ciao!, BizRate, Google, Amazon and others) have said publicly that they don’t pay MyNet Universe. If they don’t pay, where does the money come from???
Also, they are not mentioning on the documentation that distributors have to sign with ClickBank, Amazon, eBay and so on own their own. Once you sign as as distributor, they give you all these documents on how to sign directly with these companies.
WOW! Never would have publicly admitted that I was the owner of such dysfunctional thinking. Most normal people would have taken the opportunity to keep their anonymity. Not you. Screw businesses like Amazon.com, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Apple, Microsoft and e-Bay – what do they know – right?
It’s rather amusing – funny actually.
Carbayon, you’re glasses are so fogged up from the smoke your blowin’ – your looking in all the wrong places and asking all the wrong questions. I don’t have the time to educate those who can’t comprehend simple business practices and structures. Not when I have hoards of others who are light years ahead of you in that regard. You’re a minority that not only doesn’t concern me – but frankly don’t even want in business with me or with MSG.
That being said. You’re entitled to your anguish over a company that you obviously don’t see value in nor understand. Nobody’s holding a gun to your head telling you that you have to join MSG. (In fact, I’m telling you not to.) Why it continues to consume you is something I can’t help you with – that’s your choice.
PS – Not that it really matters – but your assumption that I’m a “she” is also incorrect. Not that answers or clarification ever get in the way of your illusions and perceptions that you’re the only one who’s right and everyone else is wrong. ;-P
First and fore most, this “It’s a pyramid scheme! A scam! An unsustainable model!” is NOT my comment. I stand behind all the other ones.
Saturation is simple; there tends to be 1 shop per x amount of population. You don’t see two, three, four of the SAME shops (Walmart, Target, BestBuy) on the same side of town. If there are two, three or more shops, they are spread over the city.
It is funny how you and other Genie distributors pop-up on boards and blogs discussing the Genie; that is already saturation, on a single board or blog there are three, four, five and more distributors “phissing” for customers, selling the business.
I have always said there there is money to be made, but the concern is where is the company getting the money from; a simple question, but no one can answer it. In a business you have income and expenses, your income has to be grater than your expenses. MSG has no income from PPC, as the search engines are not paying; and it has expenses, as it pays the distributors. That is what make no sense to any business person, having expenses that are greater than the income.
Sorry if I got the gender wrong.
Saturation? Really?
Walk into any mall here in the US Carbayon and you’ll find “anchor stores” in each of them. The mall close to me has Sears, JC Penny’s, Dillard’s, and Macy’s. Not only are they in close proximity – they’re housed in the same building. As shoppers walk to each of these anchor stores inside the mall, they’ll pass other clothing retailers such as Old Navy, The Limited, GAP, American Eagle, and New York New York.
Furthermore, Best Buy and Target are in the same strip mall across the street, two doors down from each other. Wal-mart is less than 1/2 mile away. On the way to Wal-mart, you’ll come to a 4-way stop with a Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, and Hyundai dealership on each corner owned by separate dealers.
I understand you’re concerned over the theory of “saturation” – but again – business clearly doesn’t have the same view or perception, because they like me understand that “saturation” is nothing more than myth perpetuated by illusion and fear.
If you choose to live in a world of lack and scarcity rather than abundance – that’s your choice. But it’s of no use or concern to someone like me who has the ability to look at life logically and realistically. (With real life examples no less.)
As stated before – you have an overwhelming amount of fear, phobia, and myths that are nothing more than weeds that need to be extracted before you can understand our business model. It’s choking out rational and logical thinking that will enable you to be successful in any business – not just MyShoppingGenie.
Like the long list of false perceptions and fears that have been documented here – you’re perception and fear over the PPC income is also false. It’s unfortunate, but we can’t clear a path for you until you’ve cleared the rest of smoke that is clouding judgment, common sense, and reason. There’s a very clear and obvious way PPC is done and distributed – but you must first let go of fear and phobia and learn how to trust and be trustworthy before it will be revealed to you in an “Ahhh moment”.
The responsibility of figuring out PPC rides on you, not MSG.
THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT SHOPS!!!
You don’t see 3 SEARS in the same mall, do you??
I go to Sears for tools (Craftsmen are the best), but I will not buy clothes from them, I may buy bed linens, but not sure either.
JC Peneeys is good for cheap casual clothes, but they don’t have tools.
Dillard’s and Macy’s are great for suits and they cater to different markets!
The same goes for Wal-Mart, BestBuy and Target, each shop caters to a different market. Can you buy the same car stereo on the 3 shops? No really, Wal-Mart and Target have low-end and BestBuy has high-end.
Same with the car dealers, some people will only buy Ford, some only Chevy and some the cheapest they can afford (Mazda, Saturn, or other).
On the other hand; when in a forum/blog/board you have 3 or 4 Genie distributors giving you THE SAME EXACT PRODCUT, that is saturation.
How come the malls you referred to only have one movie complex? they may offer multiple movies and screens, but there is only one movie complex. What about fast food?, how many McDonalds? how many Burger Kings? they have one of each, but not multiple of each. (Again different markets)
PPC is the key to the legality of the business; MSG claims you can get a piece of the Billions spend on PPC. If they don’t get paid (this has been proved already), how can they pay distributors? Are they moving funds around from license payments?
If a simple question; where is the money to PPC come from, if they don’t receive PPC income? can’t be answered, then there is a problem with the business model.
Oh bother….
Look Carbayon – you’re more than welcome to buy into the myth of “saturation” – but don’t expect everyone to agree with you or buy your side of the story.
When a new Wal-mart Super Center opened up just down the street – people just like you got all bent out of shape because there was another one already here. Both have co-existed for a number of years and we do visit both from time to time.
I have my choice of eating McDonald’s, Burger King, or Chik-fil-a inside the food court – or in the stand alone restaurants placed outside the mall. (Two in the same parking lot – and one across the street.)
I have a choice of buying a new LG BD550 Blu-Ray player from HH Gregg, the Best Buy next door, or one of the two Wal-mart’s down the street. (I’ll most likely however get it off the internet from a variety of sources that have the same player for $30 – $50 less thanks to MSG.)
Saturation is a myth dear boy – and you can crow till the cows come home – it won’t change my understanding that saturation is nothing more than a myth perpetrated by fear and phobia. (Which are nothing more than illusions in themselves.)
Avon’s been recruiting for 120 years and hasn’t saturated the market. Mary Kay’s been around since 1963 and they too haven’t succeeded in what you fear most. Both cater to very specific markets and demographic.
And lastly, I’ll correctly state that you’ve simply not been able to figure out how the PPC income is generated or paid out. That’s the only thing that’s been proven as fact thus far.
Contrary to you, I was able to correctly and adequately find my answer by doing what I told you to do more than two weeks ago. (Contact the Developer.) Instead, you’ve been looking in all the wrong places, and asking all the wrong questions. Not to mention demanding in the wrong way – as if anybody owes you the answers you’re looking for.
It’s been said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again – while expecting different results.
Change your thinking, and change your attitude – and you just might get the answers you’re looking for.
Not until then.
Again – it’s all up to you Carbayon – has nothing to do with me.
OK, let me try to explain this clearly.
I have a MyShoppingGenie installed on my PC, now 3 different distributors are asking me to install it, but I already have it installed.
Would this be considered saturation, or something else? I have 4 people (the original and 3 more) asking to use their license key on my software.
What do you call this? Unlike the other companies you mention, MyShoppingGenie only has 1 product.
If there are 3 distributors of Amway products, and I know them (because they are my friends), I can split my order, I can order 3 or 4 products from each of them or I can rotate and order one from each of them every month, thus distributing their income.
Please explain to me how I can handle when 4 distributors of MyShoppingGenie ask me to install their program, as they want their PPC income. Do I keep installing and uninstalling the software? [License key can't be changed one program is installed]
To me, that is saturation; it may not be the whole world saturation, but at the end of the day 4 people “giving” the same product to a single “buyer” is saturation.
Unlike you I am no a distributor, does the company don’t speaks to me about this matters.
You really are quite the character – I at least have to give you credit for that. You’re posting and commenting on 5 or 6 different boards all discussing and focused on MSG exclusively – of course you’re going to be asked to install the app! I’m shocked it’s just 3 or 4 people!
It’s no different than walking into 5 or 6 Sears stores. Do you think – “Man – Sears is over saturated because every time I walk into one of these stores somebody asks me – Can I help you?”
Because 3 or 4 others have beaten me to the punch with one guy I don’t even know in Ireland – I need to fold up shop because you’re already taken? There’s nobody left for me to give this to?
WOW! Who knew?!!
That being said – I have run into three or four people of my own who have already been introduced either as “users” or “distributors” and in either case they have gone to someone else. So what? I know there is an abundance of poeple out there who’ve never even heard of MSG – and I’ve managed to give away about 150 applications since April to those users. Of those, there have been some that are impressed with the app – have asked me how it works – and I’ve signed them up as Distributors. It’s less than 20%, but it sometimes works that way.
I’ve also had a few that have been introduced by others, but would prefer I get the click income or have me as their sponsor instead of someone else. (I have a knowledge, understanding, and access to information that not many in the company have.) I’ve shown them step by step how to uninstall the applet and clear their cache so I would get the credit under my license. It is possible to switch and not that hard to do. But I only do this if they ask me outright to do so. It would be unfair and unethical of me to snake others who have been introduced by someone else. (I believe in the adage of “what goes around, comes around”.)
The vast majority of people I come in contact with however are normal – everyday people who do not spend hours upon hours discussing MSG on boards and blogs Carbayon. Most, quite honestly have never even heard MSG or the possibility of what it can do until I introduce them to it. (You’d be surprised how few know about Google Products – they don’t even know it exists while they use it for search every day.)
Others that have been introduced often look it up on the internet and they may or may not find this blog. My purpose here is to educate those who are taking an honest look. If they like what they see, they’ll install it or purchase a license agreement to give it away themselves. (I’ve had both either install the app or sign up “sight unseen” – without even contacting me personally about it.) Because I’m out there actively promoting and explaining the in’s and out’s – I’ll get my fare share – even if you’ve already been introduced and taken by someone else.
That’s were we differ Carbayon. I understand and accept that this is not about me – but about them. I come from their perspective and their point of view – not my own. Those that always focus and think “what’s in it for me” will suffer lack and scarcity. (“Saturation” if you will.) If you can change your attention to values and issues “they” have, you’ve found true abundance.
What a great knowledge. Thank you a lot for sharing those article. I will definitely check it out.

I’ve recently started a blog, the information you provide on this site has helped me tremendously. Thank you for all of your time & work.
Thanks I really needed this.
What I find most interesting about the ‘evil’ of recruiting is that when it’s done for corporate purposes, its ok. As a mortgage originator, Until I stopped doing mortgages, I use to get ‘recruited’ all the time to come and work for another company. There are highly paid corporate recruiters out there; commonly called “Head Hunters.” There is NOTHING wrong with recruiting.
How/why is this any different than being ‘recruited’ to building your own network marketing business? My mortgage business was my own business too, except I was W2d instead of 1099d (if I didn’t produce a loan, I didn’t get paid – same with network marketing, if I don’t work, I don’t get paid) and I could ‘recruit’ others to be on my sales team (and earn an override on their sales) yet that’s not considered the same as ‘recruiting in network marketing.’
Another example is real estate…you have a broker and you have agents. The broker ‘recruits’ agents and they’re paid an override of every sale the agent does (if the agent doesn’t sell, they don’t get paid.) The difference: if the broker helps or teaches the agent too much, that agent realizes they can be the broker and recruit agents; thus becoming direct competition to the broker. With network marketing, you want the ‘agent’ to be successful and go off and build their own team. You are rewarded for teaching them and helping them to succeed rather than being punished by them becoming competition to you. A MUCH BETTER OUTCOME. Reward vs. Reprimand.
Our society has some really screwed up and skewed views of what network marketing really is. As humans, we network and we market every day of our lives. At least with network marketing, you’re rewarded for HELPING others. In corporate America, greed rules and it’s a ‘dog-eat-dog’ world. Personally, I’d prefer to help someone succeed and succeed along with them.
GREAT POINTS Michelle – and I couldn’t agree more.
Thanks for the comment!
